Melanie and I are thrilled to finally announce that we are moving to CHICAGO in December! We are so excited for this next adventure for our family and can’t wait to call such a wonderful place home. Chicago has always been my favorite city, and I simply can not wait. This will our first time living in a city and we are curious to see not only how we adapt but also how our crazy dog, Kaia, handles the bustling city.
Please let us know in the comments below if you have any recommendations for us in Chicago!
We can’t wait to share this next journey with you all- now to start packing.
Today is a special day because everyone’s favorite mouse is officially 90 years old! That’s right, Mickey turns 90 today and Melanie and I got to celebrate at Walt Disney World. For those of you who don’t know, Disney World is a special place for us because it is actually where we had our first official date. I know that seems like a crazy first date, but when your college is 30 minutes away from the happiest place on earth it just makes sense for a fool-proof date. Melanie and I love going to Disney and try to squeeze a visit in anytime we are in Florida. We’ve celebrated many milestones at Disney World from getting engaged, graduation, and many more. There is so many different restaurants, resorts, and experiences that each visit is a completely new adventure and our most recent trip was no exception.
We stayed at the All-Star Music resort on Disney property for a fun weekend away. I always recommend staying on Disney property when planning a trip to the parks. Not only do you constantly get to be in the Disney magic but it makes getting to the parks easy and hassle free. All resorts have trams that go to all four parks, water parks, and Disney Springs, meaning you never have to worry about driving, parking, etc. We’ve stayed at a lot of different resorts, at all different price ranges, and love how each one offers a unique theme. I also recommend having a day to just enjoy the resort and relax by pool.
Our favorite park (and the one we visited this time) is Magic Kingdom. We love this park because of all the classic Disney charm it has from walking down MainStreet USA to enjoying a LeFou’s Brew (our favorite treat) in Fantasyland. I love seeing the castle and this time we got the most coveted reservation at Disney World, a dinner reservation at Cinderella’s Royal Table. Cinderella’s Royal Table is a character dining experience where you get to eat and meet various princesses while overlooking fantasyland from inside Cinderella’s castle. I was so overwhelmed by this entire experience and honestly didn’t know where to look. We were served a three course meal of our choosing and since I have a gluten allergy the chef personally delivered all our courses. I had read reviews saying that the food was just okay but Melanie and I both were so impressed with the food. It was delicious! So while we were dealing with the chef and being presented our meal, all the princesses started coming up to our table. It was definitely entertaining to see Melanie interact with all of the characters especially since she didn’t know who half of them were. The most amazing thing about our experience in the castle was that we were there during the nightly fireworks show, Happily Ever After. It was pretty magical to see fireworks through the large glass stained window while being in a beautiful ballroom. It was unreal.
Mickey Mouse is the reason we are all able to experience the true magic of Disney through its movies, characters, stories, and parks. Today we celebrate Mickey’s birthday and as Walt famously said “I hope we never lose sight of one thing-that it was all started by a mouse.” Happy 90th Birthday, Mickey Mouse!
When I was asking people what I should include in my blog, I had an overwhelming response to talk about my hair tips and tricks. For those of you who don’t know, I am a licensed cosmetologist and have been doing hair for a few years now! I always loved playing with and doing other people’s hair, so naturally it made sense to make that my profession. That being said, I love testing and learning about any and all products and wanted to share with you some of my current hair faves. Obviously everyone has different hair- these products work for my long, straight, fine textured, thick, and colored hair, but might not be the best for you. I am fairly picky about products that I use on myself and how they smell plays a big factor. I can confidently say that the following products both work and smell amazing. These are the current products that I am using in my everyday hair care routine!
First let’s talk about shampoo and conditioner. Shampoo is probably the product I change most often, but I always come back to my tried and true Matrix’s Biolage ColorLast Shampoo and Conditioner. As I said, I have very thick, colored hair and finding a shampoo that gets me feeling both clean while also not fading my color is crucial. I tend to have dry ends and an oily scalp, and have found that both the shampoo and conditioner are moisturizing without making your hair super slick or greasy. I also will use purple shampoo, like Amika Bust Your Brass, to combat the brassy tones that always appear in my hair when I’m in between toners.
So we can’t talk about shampoo and not talk about dry shampoo. As you probably know by now, you really shouldn’t wash your hair everyday. If you wash your hair everyday you are stripping the hair of natural oils that it needs, and therefore increasing the actual amount of oil produced. I probably wash my hair only two times a week but for those in between days I use my dry shampoo. I am obsessed with Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo. It is an aerosol, color safe dry shampoo. I love this one because it doesn’t leave that white powdery look once you’ve worked it in. I’ve also found that a little goes a long way, and the full size can lasts for a long time. It makes you feel refreshed and just like you have clean hair! It also does a fantastic job at adding volume into the hair for dry styling. A tip I have is to apply dry shampoo then let it sit. Don’t work it in just yet! I typically do my makeup while my dry shampoo is sitting and then once I’m done with my makeup I will work the product into my roots with my hands.
On one of the days where I actually wash my hair I will always apply Aveda’s Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair after showering. I take about a nickel to dime sized amount and apply this to damp or towel dried hair from the mid to ends. I then will comb the product through my hair. What I love about this product is that it has protein in it to help repair the hair and strengthen it. It also is a heat protectant, which is something literally everyone needs if you use any type of heat on your hair. If you’ve never used Aveda products you should known that they are all plant-based products and are made using wind energy.
Another one of my favorites is Ouai Hair Oil. I started using this product once it launched. I use this on both damp and dry hair. It seals split ends, keeps color from fading, and is also a heat protectant. I also use this on styled hair to add moisture back to my dry ends and to tame flyaways.
Once I’ve styled my hair I always hit it with a bit of hairspray. I like a lot of different hairsprays such as Aveda’s AirControl, but have enjoyed using the classic L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray. This hairspray holds hair in place without looking stiff. I love it because it helps my curls last all day and it doesn’t feel sticky. You can actually brush your hair with this hairspray in it. One look that I always use a lot of hairspray for is when I do sleek ponytails. A tip I have for any sleek look is to apply the hairspray using a toothbrush. I started doing this ten years ago and it is the best trick. All you do is you take a simple toothbrush (I have one just for hairspray), spray the hairspray directly onto it and then brush the hairspray into the hair. This is how I get a high shine, super sleek ponytail with zero flyaways.
The last product I want to talk about isn’t necessarily an everyday product but I try to use it almost every week. Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector is a treatment that rebuilds the bonds in your hair and it is heavenly. I first started using this on my clients, especially my blondes, and then just decided to use it on myself one day and oh my goodness is it amazing. It makes your hair incredibly soft, shiny, and strong and who doesn’t want that?! This 10 minute minimum (I always go longer) treatment is applied to towel dried hair before you shampoo and condition. Olaplex finally started selling this to the public, not just professionals, and I definitely would recommend going to Sephora to pick one up. It is the perfect treatment to do for those nights you just want to stay in and watch Netflix.
And there you have it, my everyday hair care product round up. I cant wait to share more of my hair and beauty tips and tricks with you all. Please let me know if you have tried any of these or are going to try any of the tips I mentioned. I genuinely love hair care and love learning about what other products people use. What are some of your favorite everyday hair care products? Let me know in the comments below!
For those of you who don’t know, today is my favorite holiday. I have always loved dressing up in costumes for as long as I can remember so naturally Halloween is my favorite. There has never been a Halloween where I haven’t dressed up as something. This year my little family and I decided to dress up as characters from the show Riverdale. Melanie and I have been obsessed with Riverdale (and watch it every Wednesday) and when we were thinking of ideas for our costumes this was an easy choice for us to do. I went as Veronica Lodge in her River Vixens uniform, Melanie went as Betty Cooper, and our dog Kaia was reluctantly dressed as Jughead Jones. In the past we have dressed up as Piper and Alex from Orange is the New Black, black and white swans from Black Swan, and cats.
Another tradition that Melanie and I started doing three years ago was to make gluten free White Bean Chicken Chili on halloween. We always do the same easy recipe and its something we both look forward to having every year. What makes this recipe so great is it is a crock-pot recipe so you just have to throw everything in the pot and then let it cook! Here are the ingredients to add to the crock pot:
2-3 boneless skinless chicken breasts
32oz low-sodium chicken stock
2 cans of white beans (15oz cans)
2 cans diced green chiles (4.5oz cans)
3 cloves of garlic minced
1 small yellow onion
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Throw all of this into a crock-pot and then cook it on high for 3 hours. Once it has cooked, just shred the chicken and then top the chili with fresh cilantro, shredded cheese, avocado, fresh chopped jalapeño, and fresh lime! It’s so easy and perfect for a cold fall night.
I love being able to have these little traditions with my family and can’t wait to continue them through the years for all of our holidays together.

This past September, my wife Melanie and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary. There’s something to be said about how much marriage can change a relationship. I honestly didn’t believe that our relationship would feel much different after getting married, especially since we had been together for five years and had lived together as well- but it changed. This is hard to put into words, but the gravity of legally being bound in marriage to another person really does impact your relationship. There was almost an unspoken change that occurred in us once we walked down the aisle wife and wife.
The time honestly flew by, but also seemed like a long time coming at some points. They say that the first year of marriage is hard, and let me tell you, it is hard. Everything seemed to keep falling apart and knocking us down…literally our roof collapsed on our bed (in January, in Michigan!). I got my car stuck in snow (and towed) three times, our new puppy got attacked and needed pins put in her leg, Melanie was dealing with an ongoing complicated relationship with her family, we lost power on Christmas Day, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.Wehonestly just felt like life was testing us and our new status as a married couple. However through all of this we just kept reminding ourselves of a vow that I said on our wedding day: “When things seem imperfect, remind yourself of all the ways that we are perfect together.” We are in it together, through the good and bad, never alone.
If you’re gay, you will still have to come out constantly as a couple. You will still have to explain your relationship and people might ask you if its even legal- welcome to the Midwest! Also, if you both now have the same last name, people will assume you’re sisters or cousins. However, saying “that’s my wife” will definitely answer the question much quicker than the short monologue I was used to before.
Play to each other’s strengths. Your decisions, successes, and failures impact two people now, not just one.
Keeping a shared vision or goal for yourselves as a couple will help you not sweat the small things.
I honestly married the most amazing woman. I wouldn’t change this past year for the world, because we grew a ton and it brought us closer together. I can honestly say that I love her more than I did on our wedding day, which I never thought was possible. Marriage is definitely a challenge and you need to work at it everyday, but sharing your life with your best friend is worth all of it.It is the greatest joy in my life to be married to the person that I love, and I can’t wait for the years to come.
Thank you to Zaina Mahmoud for taking these photos on our one year anniversary.
I am so excited to be finally announcing the start of my new blogging adventure, The Rainbow Wife. Here I hope to not only document special everyday moments in my life, but to also be the inspiration my 15 year old self was constantly searching for. I would have never believed that I would be living the life I am now- an out femme lesbian married to another femme lesbian, a certified cosmetologist passionate about making the world beautiful, a proud dog mom to the best dog ever, and living unapologetically as my true self.
I wanted to create this space to showcase my love for style (fashion, hair, and home), love (married life and being a part of the LGBT community), and travel!
The name The Rainbow Wife is really special to me because I feel it perfectly embodies who I am as well as what this blog is about. I am extremely proud and honored to be a wife and to also have a wife, Melanie, who I love fiercely. Being a femme lesbian is also a large part of my identity, and it took me a long time to embrace that part of me. I try to live my life to the fullest and as colorfully as possible just like a rainbow. Also thanks to my mom for her creativity in helping me come up with this name!
I’m so excited to share this with you and hope you will follow me along as I share these special life moments, advice, and experiences with you. I want to welcome you to The Rainbow Wife!
